Today’s Reading: Matthew 6:25a (HCSB)
This is why I tell you: Don’t worry about your life…
Today’s Question: How often do you worry about the issues of your life?
Today’s Commentary:
When you read the words, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” many of you will have a great disdain for me for the rest of the day. You will be whistling the Bobby McFerrin song made popular in 1988, with its catchy tune and simple message. The chart-topping a cappella song got at least part of its message right. Jesus, however, gave us the complete guide to worry-free living in Matthew 6:25-34.
Worry is not only a problem, but is big business in the American society. Advertisers and physicians pay their bills on the overly concerned and fearful. One of the basic human needs is security; and there are plenty of products and services available that will promise safety and happiness. Most of these are a waste of time and money. Jesus gives the prescription that will go beyond treatment of the symptoms. He offers a cure to worry.
First, Jesus states that we must “seek first the kingdom of God.” (vs. 33) The worries of life diminish in proportion to the focus we have at any given minute on our Lord and His work. If we look at how God is moving in our lives today, how He is providing for us and how the Spirit is guiding, then there is no need to focus on the problems we may face tomorrow. (vs. 34)
Second, if our allegiance is to God alone, as the Master of our lives, then worry will cease to be an issue. (vs. 24) As Jesus is given the position of Lord in our lives, we relinquish control. All things are in His hands and are now His responsibility. This is not only a desirable position; it is the design for which we were created. It is amazing how the treasures of our heart change when Jesus is leading our lives. (vs. 20)
Third, to live worry-free, we must walk daily in faith. Our faith is not in our own ability or circumstances. We trust in the Holy Spirit to work out God’s will through us. We seek not to be a hindrance to His guidance. Faith is the key to continue living without worry.
We do worry. No one is immune. An eternal perspective is the mindset in which frees us from being temporally concerned. “Will this decision, difficulty, or concern matter in Heaven?” If the answer is “no,” you have the freedom in Christ to let this issue go. It cannot cloud your mind any longer. If there are eternal ramifications, then let Christ take care of it. Be responsible and do what is consistent with His Word. Be faithful and obedient and the Spirit will take you step-by-step through the rest.
This week, we will examine the details of the Lord’s teaching on worry. But for now, we need to remember the command of Jesus: “Do not worry about your life…” This is more than a strong statement; it is a promise. Rest in the fact that God will take care of you.
“Follow One, Lead Others” Principle #41: Disciples of Jesus have no need to worry about life, for they are safe in the care of their Master.
