How to Walk…Pleasing to God

Do you walk with a purpose?

I am one of “those people.” I prefer to walk up the escalator at the mall. On occasion (just for fun), I have even run up the escalator, surely catching the attention of the “mall cops.” Part of the reason is impatience and the other part is the sensation of rising quickly (re: the rapture).

Some other people have the idea that walking up the escalator is a waste of energy. “Why walk when you can ride?” Yet, I walk (or run) with a purpose. If you see me in a mall, you must know that I am on a specific mission- an item on clearance to be conquered. I go to it, take it (pay for it), and go home. No escalator is going to slow me down. Therefore, I walk with a purpose.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:1, the Apostle Paul speaks of purposeful walking. “…We ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.” (ESV) Notice that the church fellowship was indeed “walking” already. Yet, Paul was encouraging them to walk more and for a reason.

My life is a “walk” that either points to God or points to myself and my desires. My devotion and my worship are either self-serving or honoring to God. He is most pleased when I am surrendered to Him and reflect His glory with my life. Therefore, I must walk daily and continually with the purpose of pleasing my Lord and Creator.
